#TotD – Tip of the Day:
After securing the first pick in a Trials round, slow down. Do not immediately commit to a full push. Instead, use your man-advantage to control the map, force risky revives, and let the round timer become your greatest weapon.
Why This Works (The Deep Dive):
- Super Economy is King: Trials is often decided by which team gets their Supers first. A round that lasts 90 seconds generates more Super energy than one that ends in 20. By extending the round after an early pick, you’re investing in a powerful advantage for Rounds 4 and 5, potentially securing a free win.
- Forces Mistakes: The enemy team is now on a timer and at a numbers disadvantage. They have two bad choices:
- Play for the Rez: This exposes them to your team holding angles, making them vulnerable to snipes, grenades, or teamshots.
- Play Aggro 2v3: They must make a heroic play. Most teams aren’t disciplined enough to do this successfully and will often push separately or into bad sightlines.
- Control the Narrative: You dictate the pace. The burden of action shifts entirely to the enemy. Your team can calmly collapse on a rez attempt or pick off a flanker who gets impatient.
How to Execute This Strategy:
- Phase 1: Secure the Pick. Use a sniper lane, teamshot, or a calculated duel to get the first down. Call it out clearly.
- Phase 2: Set Up Control. The team should immediately shift to holding safe, complementary sightlines on the orb and common approach routes. Do not all rush the orb. One player can apply light pressure while others watch flanks.
- Phase 3: Punish & Convert. If they go for the rez, collapse with grenades and teamfire. If they play passive, slowly tighten the noose and pinch them. If the clock hits ~10 seconds, you can often just disengage and win via timeout with your life advantage.
Best Use Cases
Pull this move when the sweat is real and every decision matters. Break it out in those super-tight, 50/50 matches where you and the enemy team are basically mirror images. This is your secret weapon for the heart-attack games on your Flawless card, from match four onwards, when one dumb push can shatter your Lighthouse dreams.
It’s absolutely chef’s kiss against teams of W-key warriors who can’t help but ego-challenge after a down – they’ll sprint right into your crosshairs. And if the map has some ratty, cheesy corner to hold down? That’s your cue to lock it down and let the timer do the dirty work for you.
Important Counter-Strategy:
What if YOU are the team that lost the first pick?
You must act quickly and together. You have about 5-10 seconds to make a coordinated, all-in push to try and steal a pick back before the enemy team gets fully set up. If that fails, it’s often better to save your lives and reset for the next round than to feed more kills and Super energy.
This tip isn’t about being passive, it’s about being patient and strategic. Turning one kill into a round win while also building Super energy is the hallmark of a top-tier Trials team. Play the clock, and you’ll win more cards.
