New to WoW Forever? 5 Big Changes to Know Before You Play

World of Warcraft News & Updates

WoW Forever takes the original Azeroth and gives players new reasons to explore it. Expect expanded zones, changes to familiar classes, account-wide progression and another way to play with built-in controller support.

If you’re coming from Classic, some old habits will need updating. If this is your first WoW adventure, you can learn alongside everyone discovering Forever’s changes.

5 Big Changes in WoW Forever

1. A bigger Azeroth with new quests and dungeons

Forever builds on the Eastern Kingdoms and Kalimdor—the two continents at the heart of original World of Warcraft. Blizzard’s overview promises new and expanded zones, more than 1,000 new quests and new dungeons.

You’ll still recognize familiar locations, but there’s more to discover between them. See Blizzard’s official WoW Forever overview.

What changes for your first playthrough?

For a beginner, quests introduce the world while helping you earn experience, equipment and money. More quests give you more adventures to investigate as you level.

Returning players should approach familiar areas with some curiosity. An old Classic route might get you moving, but it won’t explain every Forever addition.

Beginner tip: Follow quests appropriate for your level, and check nearby quest hubs before making a long journey. You don’t need a perfect leveling route to get started.

2. Level 60 is a lasting goal

Forever is designed as a permanent branch of WoW, running alongside Modern and Classic. Its level cap is 60, with continued updates planned around that foundation. Read the Forever overview.

For a new player, the level cap is the highest character level you can reach. Getting there unlocks another stage of your adventure, but you’ll spend the journey learning abilities, upgrading equipment and exploring zones.

Does progression stop at level 60?

No. Character level is only one form of progression. Equipment and other systems give players goals beyond reaching the cap, while future updates are intended to expand Forever’s adventures.

The useful distinction is between finishing your leveling journey and finishing everything you want to do.

Beginner tip: Give yourself goals along the way. Learning a dungeon, developing a profession or getting comfortable with your role can make a session worthwhile before you reach 60.

3. Classic classes return with updated abilities and talents

Forever keeps the original nine classes: Warrior, Paladin, Hunter, Rogue, Priest, Shaman, Mage, Warlock and Druid.

Their familiar identities return, but changes to abilities and talents mean you shouldn’t assume a Classic build transfers perfectly. Talents are the choices you make while leveling to develop particular strengths within your class. Learn more about Forever’s classes and features.

How should a beginner choose a class?

Start with what you want to do during an ordinary fight.

Do you like casting from a distance? Fighting beside a pet? Sneaking past trouble? Healing teammates? Taking the hits while your group deals damage?

Those preferences help you narrow your choice before comparing builds. Remember that a class may support several roles, depending on its specialization and available options.

A tier list can help answer a specific question, but first understand what it ranks: solo leveling, dungeon damage, healing and PvP are different activities.

Beginner tip: Read each ability when you learn it and try it during a manageable fight. Utility skills are easy to overlook when your damage buttons seem to do the job.

4. Legacy progression connects your characters

The Legacy system adds an account-wide progression layer alongside your class talents.

Certain challenges award Legacy Points. Those points become available across your account, while individual characters spend them on perks in separate Legacy trees. Read the Legacy system guide.

How is Legacy different from leveling?

Leveling develops the character you’re currently playing. Legacy connects some of your progress across characters.

That makes it relevant when you start an alt—a second character. Your new character still has its own leveling journey, but it can benefit from Legacy progress you’ve already earned.

Your class talents and Legacy choices also serve different purposes. You’ll manage them separately.

Beginner tip: When Legacy becomes relevant to your character, read the available challenges and perk descriptions before spending points. Look for benefits that match how you actually play.

5. Built-in controller support offers another way to play

Forever introduces native gamepad support, including a controller interface, action bars and targeting controls.

Button combinations let you access different abilities. That matters in WoW, where your character gradually gains more skills than a controller has face buttons. Read the controller gameplay guide.

What should you practice first?

Before joining a dungeon group, make sure you can comfortably:

  • Select an enemy and switch targets.
  • Use your main attacks and defensive abilities.
  • Interact with quest givers and select rewards.
  • Open your bags and manage loot.
  • Select a teammate if your role requires it.

Movement may feel comfortable before menus and targeting do. Give each part of the interface a try.

Beginner tip: Learn your controls in a safe area, then practice against straightforward enemies. A crowded fight is a rough place to discover you can’t find your defensive ability.

Getting started without overthinking it

Choose a class that interests you, learn your abilities as they unlock and leave some room for exploration. Use Forever-specific guides when you hit a question, rather than trying to memorize every system before logging in.

Your first goal is to get comfortable enough to enjoy the next adventure—whether that’s finishing a quest chain, trying a dungeon or finding a group you want to play with again.
